5 players to who have never played for the USMNT
MLS Soccer has grown into one of the most engrossing sports in United States, and the country’s history to crop up with occasional surprises at big stages is nothing new. USA has been blessed with few ingenious talents who have been recognized throughout the World, albeit a handful of them chose not to don the national jersey. Here are the top 5 players who never played for USMNT.
The veteran defender who once plied his trade for Borussia Dortmund and achieved the tag of one of their most loved players was born in Yugoslavia. After his family moved to USA, Subotic represented USA at age level, but chose to represent Serbia and played 2 World Cups for the Eagles. However, Subotic’s career has been blighted by recurrent injuries since 2013, and he was offloaded from his beloved career as well.
USA has had problems with their defence, and despite producing prodigies like Pulisic, Subotic’s presence would have been commanding.
One of the many Italian immigrants to have settled into USA, Rossi’s story is one of the normal ones. Rossi’s talent was never doubted and before roaming around Europe and finally getting success at Villareal, the Italian was asked to pledge his allegiance for the USMNT, but he declined the offer in 2006, and chose to play for his motherland.
Rossi then went on to make 30 appearances for Italy and scored 7 goals, but his cruciate ligament has been a constant plague throughout his career. His international career never reached the heights and a slump in form and emergence of strikers like Balotelli and later Immobile didn’t help his cause.
A solid defensive midfielder who has grown into Dortmund’s starting XI recently, Thomas Delaney is a solid presence in the Danish National team as well. Delaney played all Denmark’s 4 matches in the 2018 World Cup and concluded an impressive individual performance. The story could have been different as he was eligible to play for USMNT, because of his grandfather linkage.
The 27-year old could have bolstered USA’s midfield and their recent woes have cemented that claim.
A legend for Fulham, Brede was a constant presence in his six-year span. Standing at 6’6’’, Brede’s biggest attribute was his aerial presence. Instrumental in Fulham’s 2010 Europe League run, Brede went on to represent Norway 91 times and donned the captain’s band in 48 of them. He is considered Norway’s best ever player, but in his tenure, Norway never qualified for anything major. Brede had the opportunity to represent USA, but he alleged his allegiance to Norway.
One of the hottest prospects in Premier League, Trent came up through Liverpool’s academy and is now tops Klopp’s preference chart. The young right back is an explosive player with excellent set-piece abilities. As he spent most of his life in England, and although he could have donned USMNT’s jersey through his grandmother, but he chose to represent the three lions.
USA will be one of the three host nations at the 2026 World Cup, and the nation could have produced numerous legends had the players in question pleaded for different allegiance.
