John Brooks has become the most expensive US footballer of all time after joining Wolfsburg from Hertha Berlin for a reported £17.4m. The previous record belonged to Jozy Altidore after his move from AZ Alkmaar to Sunderland for €10m back in 2013.
The 24-year-old defender was born in Berlin to a German mother and an American father, and played for Hertha Berlin for his entire career. Hertha Berlin have enjoyed an excellent Bundesliga campaign this season and qualified for the Europa League. On the flip side, Wolfsburg finished only in 16th in the standings and had to win a playoff in order to avoid relegation.
Brooks is already a veteran for the Star and Stripes national team as he has 30 caps and played at the 2014 World Cup, scoring the winner against Ghana in the US’ opening fixture. He scored twice in his 24 appearances for Hertha Berlin this season and is currently with the U.S. squad ahead of their International friendly with Venezuela.
