New York City midfielder Andrea Pirlo has topped the MLS shirt sales for 2016, topping last year’s leading player Clint Dempsey.
Pirlo has risen three places from last year having finished 4th in the rankings in 2015, while NYC teammate David Villa has risen up to third.
Seattle Sounders’ Jordan Morris and La Galaxy’s Steven Gerrard round off the top five, with the latter himself falling three places from twelve months prior, having been second in the rankings after announcing his move to Los Angeles in January 2015.
Sebastian Giovinco, Dom Dwyer and Didier Drogba have all broken into the top ten this year as Bradley Wright-Phillips, Brek Shea and Mix Diskerud found themselves dropping out.
Pirlo’s cult hero status in football has been maintained across Europe and extended into America since his move to the Big Apple and is currently a key component in Patrick Vieira’s team as they look to make the playoffs for the first time.
