Portland Timbers ease to win over San Jose

Portland Timbers took their chances at home to Sporting Kansas, to give themselves all three points and move themselves 6th in the Western Conference, giving themselves a chance of getting into the MLS playoffs come the end of the season.

Portland Timbers were left in shock after Diego Chara was shown red early on in the game, after shoving a San Jose player in the face. The pressure was right on the side, with Sporting Kansas having chance after chance. However, they held off for a big part of the game before San Jose themselves had a man sent off in the 39th minute as Soni Mustivar was sent off for a foul on the halfway line. Although the player was sent off, it looked harsh on the Sporting Kansas player.

However, this didn’t stop the pressure being piled on the Portland Timbers backline, with them being limited to any chances. Portland looked solid on the counter-attack and did cause a few problems throughout the match.

Another goal in the 91st minute for Portland rubbed it in for Sporting Kansas and marked off a defensively solid performance for Portland Timbers.

This would have been a massive boost for this Portland Timbers side, and one they can take into the weeks to come. The red card for Portland Timbers could have affected their chances in this game. However, it could make a bigger difference in weeks to come as they are now without Ben Zemanski through injury and Diego Chara who received the red card.

They now face DC United in their next game on the weekend which could be a difficult one without both of those players. This game kicks off on the 13th of August at 19:00.
