Wayne Rooney couldn’t inspire DC United in the playoffs after a disappointing penalty shootout

The English legend was seen to be the sole hope left for DC United when he joined them from Everton. Rooney did not need any time to adjust to USA, and hit the turf running after a sensational Maldini to Pirlo transition in just few seconds. Rooney was off scoring from every particular situation and he rejuvenated his freekick skills with a couple of thunderous efforts. DC United was having a hard time before Rooney’s transfer and they banked on the former Manchester United man heavily. Rooney quickly gained their trust and it looked like the playoffs may only have been a formality, but as the game went into extra time following an enthralling 2-2 draw, it looked like Rooney’s team may not find it easy.

Rooney stepped up to take United’s first penalty, and his effort didn’t trouble the goalkeeper or the net as he was quite wide of his target. Luciano Acosta and Nick DeLeon followed suit and Columbus Crew emerged as the winner. DeLeon scored a beauty to take the game into extra time at the death, but he couldn’t make the difference. Columbus Crew will now lock horns with New York Red Bulls for the Eastern Conference final spot.

On the other hand Real Salt Lake inflicted a 3-2 defeat on Los Angeles FC to win their first playoff since 2013. Real Salt Lake didn’t have a great run and lost 3 of their matches during the road. LAFC on the other hand played well and especially were formidable at their home with only one loss. DamirKreilach was the hero for Real Salt Lake as he netted twice, but LAFC kept the doors open with Ramirez and Carlos Vela breathing down their neck In fact Ramirez gave LAFC the lead in the 51st minute but a defiant Kreilach thought otherwise.
